The cruising program is here to serve the BSC cruising members by implementing community activities that promote the love of sailing, respect for each other, volunteerism, education and community activities. Some of our activities are:

    • Member sails on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
    • Sunday Funday Races.
    • Overnight events. These involve sailing to a marina in the Chesapeake, spending the night there and sailing back.
    • Raft-ups, location depends on the interest, such concerts and swim trips.
    • Training events on Mondays and Saturdays

The BSC cruising program is run by a council comprised of volunteer members as well as committees to carry out the operations of the program. We rely on volunteers to maintain the cruising fleet and implement the events and educational offerings.

To join the cruising program, you need to pay a fee. There are two levels: Crew and Skipper. The fees are established every year and pulished on the website. This will allow you to participate in all the events and activities we offer. We also have a skipper upgrade available to qualified members. Skippers can reserve boats for private use. They are also expected to volunteer for events. Everyone is expected to volunteer for work parties.

The work of the program is handled by various committees. These are:

  • Fleet Maintenance Committee: Supervisors and boat managers will handle the work parties and boat maintenance as well as orienting skippers on the boats. This committee decides items that need to be purchased in a consultative manner.

  • Events Committee: Scheduling events in the BSC calendar, making marina reservations, recruiting skippers/crew for boats, reserving boats for the events.

  • Cruising Education Committee: Promote a friendly learning environment thru mentorship and practice sessions as well as technical seminars. Education committee is responsible for training and testing skipper candidates. The committee chair will coordinate scheduling and track progress of each candidate.

  • Budget Committee: Items required for the maintenance of the boats will be tracked in a spreadsheet that will be updated and made available to all council members every month. Purchases will be tracked based on date, boat, item, price and classification as a minimum.

  • Recruitment and Retention Committee: Serves as an ambassador for the program to find new members, keep current members engaged both during the season and during the winter months. Explain program activities and goals to potential members.

  • Boat Acquisition and Disposal Committee: Locate potential donation boats and evaluate them for suitability to the program. Sell older boats to make room for newer and better vessels.
