POI and Comments:

Because the sea state could be rough when reefing the sails is needed, we try to maintain helm control by keeping the boat moving under a reduced jib on a close-hauled course instead of heaving-to. This prevents the large boom from accidentally swinging and ejecting people off the cabin top and over the side. The back end of the boom should remain within the lines of the boat. This differs from small boat handling when people are required to single-handedly reef the main from a heave-to position.
