Each boat has two battery banks. We use AGM group 24/27 batteries connected thru a switch.

  • Bank #1 is the house battery and bank #2 is the starting battery.

  • When the engine is not running, we set the battery switch to #1.

  • When cranking the engine, we set it to bank #2.

  • Once the engine starts, we set it to Both or 1+2 so that both banks are charged by the engine alternator.

  • The solar panel controller as well as other indicators on the main DC panel can display the battery voltage. A fully charged battery displays 12.6 volts or better. While the solar panel is connected on a sunny day or when the engine is running, the voltage should rise to 13.5+ volts.
